Corporate Social Responsibility
Being a responsible hotel has always been an important parameter of our corporate identity. Find out how Hotel Princess Lanassa gives a little back.
The Environment
Since Hotel Princess Lanassa opened its doors to the public we have been very keen to reduce the environmental impact of our hotel. This is not surprising as the Founder of the Hotel had studied Energy Engineering back in the 70’s. This way of thinking therefore, is a significant part of our community.
GreenBuilding Partner
Hotel Princess Lanassa is considered a “GreenBuilding Partner”. GreenBuilding is the European Union’s programme designed to enhance the energy efficiency of non-residential buildings.
Energy Efficiency
We find that an effective way of improving our energy efficiency is sustainability. Thus, the local stone was the main material used to construct our buildings. This minimised the use of transport and the fuel emissions that go with it to the environment. The use of stone reduced the need for other non-renewable materials whose production entails high carbon dioxide emissions as well as high energy consumption during production.
Another main material used for the construction, was wood which during its life and through photosynthesis gathers carbon, making it a highly sustainable material. Specifically, the carbon stored is equal to the 50% of its weight and hence, harvesting, transportation and processing would have produced fewer emissions in comparison to the amount of carbon stored. Also, during the construction we refurbished an early 18th century country house in order to keep the traditional building and reduce the surface area of the contemporary building. Moreover, the thermal insulation of our buildings ensures the minimisation of heat loss and therefore, energy consumption.
Photovoltaic panels have been installed on the roof in order to generate our own energy and hence, reduce our CO2 Footprint. LED bulbs are chosen for lighting which use the least electricity possible. In order to reduce our operational environmental impact we also encourage our guests to minimise unnecessary energy consumption for laundering towels and linens. In addition, we are committed to encouraging sensible water usage. We recently installed modern heat pumps for heating and cooling purposes. This aims to reduce our energy use. Finally, we have been substantially reducing the use of single use plastics. From 2014, we have been purposively encouraging our guests to use their taps which provide drinking water instead of having to buy bottled water.
Giving Back
We are particularly proud of our forefathers who created a foundation back in 1985, in order to help and support our local community. Since it opened its doors to the public, our firm has continued to show a strong commitment through consistent involvement and considers this a very vital part of our company’s social responsibility.
Our foundation uses most of its income for the construction of various small projects, such as the opening and maintenance of rural roads, tree planting and other similar works useful to the inhabitants and visitors of the village.
